"The Along the Walk project took place between 2022 and 2024 in different locations across Europe, namely - France, Slovenia, Germany and Belgium, and partly in Italy and Croatia. Six artistic duos and a duo of artistic directors, all with background in performing arts, carried out two 10-day artistic Walks each. The project took place in rural parts of Europe, where the duos travelled on foot. Their artistic practices engaged local audiences and the people they met along the way. The second manner in which the artistic Walks manifested themselves was the conference in Berlin in April 2024, where each of the six duos held a workshop through which they shared the artistic methods they had developed on their Walks. The third manner, which can reach a wider audience, can be found in this book.
The book is not a documentation of the project, hence it is not merely an afterthought to record what happened on the Walks.
The book is not a theoretical compendium which would critically reflect on artistic practices and their socio-political-economic aspects from a distance.
Instead, the book is conceived as an art gallery housing a group exhibition "Written Traces of Artistic Walks".
Each of the six artistic Walks - Along the Weight, The Loophole, The Route to the Roots, The Biggest Spectacle in the World, The Grimm Sisters and Je suis Hermann - is showcased with its own exhibition space. The material on display, drawn from the artists' own experiences and artistic approaches, includes: diary entries, reflections, musings, a performance script, an interview, a literary product, lists and more. The written traces offer insights into the different aspects of artistic processes and strategies of processual art, both of which are the focus of the Along the Walk project. Each of the individual exhibitions is accompanied by a curatorial text by one of the writers, coming from the field of theory and critic of performing arts."
